How to Reduce Noise in a Digital SLR Camera

October 12, 2015 by Mary Buck

How to reduce noise in a digital SLR Camera?

It is actually a degradation in image quality caused by using a high ISO or by using a long exposure. In the video below I will show you how to reduce noise in the camera with both a Nikon and a Canon digital SLR camera.   If you would like to view more of my videos please subscribe the Studio 2.8 YouTube Channel.

Back Button Focus

October 7, 2014 by Mary Buck

I recently learned about back button focus on my Canon DSLR camera. My sister told me about is a couple years ago, but I figured I was so use to the normal way to focus I wouldn’t need it. I finally decided to try it and all I can say is “WOW” – it is so much easier to focus for my portrait work and also my flower photography. I decided to make a video so you can learn how to do it. You can try back button focus and if you don’t like it you can always go back to the old way. One of my goals this year is to try new things and back button focus is just one of the unexpected changes I have made.

What’s Your Picture Style?

March 3, 2014 by Mary Buck

393 What's Your Picture Style?

This is something that is not covered in the Beginner level class but it really a useful tool and so easy.
On the Canon DSLR there is a “picture style” setting in the menu. For Nikon it is called “picture control” The setting will give you options for Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, and user defined options. Pictured left is how the menu option appears on my Canon 7D.
What do these mean?  Well experiment and find out,
I use three regularly.  I use the portrait mode for shooting portraits, so the skin tones are exposed and rendered properly.  I also use the landscape mode when I am shooting landscapes and flowers. This mode saturates the colors, makes the greens greener and the other colors more vivid.  Lastly, I do use the monochrome setting when I see an image that would look great as a black and white. When using the last mode, I always shoot it in color and black and white.
So go have fun and play with your picture styles and controls.
Below are some photos I have taken with the landscape mode.
